I think we're gonna need a bigger
Six police officers were injured and 11 people detained following the latest rioting Sunday night, with youths burning eight cars and setting garbage bins alight, authorities of the Seine-Saint-Denis region said.
The rioting in Clichy-Sous-Bois was triggered by the electrocution deaths Thursday night of two teenagers, 15 and 17 years old, who took refuge in a power substation to escape police.
One of Gilbert & Sullivan's characters suggested the punishment fit the crime. But here's a case where the punishment is identical to the crime:
Hundreds of angry youths rioted in a Paris suburb early on Thursday, setting fire to cars and shop fronts, after two of their peers were electrocuted while fleeing police.
The rampage in Clichy-sous-Bois, northeast of Paris, started with an attack on firefighters called in to help the two youths, who died after seeking cover next to an electrical transformer. A third youth suffered serious burns.
Crowds of rioters hurled stones at the firefighters then rioted through the streets until early morning, leaving a trail of charred destruction as they set fire to cars, garbage cans and buildings.
"[T]he defense of freedom is worth our sacrifice"
Zarqawi has said that Americans are, "the most cowardly of God's creatures." But let us be clear: It is cowardice that seeks to kill children and the elderly with car bombs. It's cowardice that cuts the throat of a bound captive. It is cowardice that targets worshipers leaving a mosque. It is courage that liberated more than 50 million people; it is courage that keeps an untiring vigil against the enemies of a rising democracy. It is courage in the cause of freedom that will once again destroy the enemies of freedom. - G. W. Bush
"the peace of the Catacombs"
The Cuban government loved the Smurfs. It was one of the few "Capitalist" cartoons allowed on Channel 6, the main channel on Cuban TV's two-channel broadcasting regime. It is easy to see why that was so: the Smurfs personify the myth of the Noble Savage, the peaceful, loving natives, uncorrupted by modern life, and said myth is part of the Marxist Canon. Because of that, as a Cuban boy, I watched Smurfs episodes to last me a lifetime. - Ruy Diaz
turbans in a twist
Some people say that the press needs to be constructive, and sometimes I also think that'd be nice. But who's to say what's constructive? That's an unfair demand to make. The press needs to be critical - I need to bear that as prime minister and religions must do so as well - Anders Fogh Rasmussen
